Developing high-value publishing services for the scientific community
Underpinning our mission to communicate world-class research and innovation to the widest possible audience is a content programme that spans journals, ebooks, conference proceedings and science journalism. Our product-development highlights for 2018 reflect the diverse and innovative nature of those publishing services, covering all core subdisciplines of physics as well as materials science, biosciences, astronomy, environmental research and other fast-growing areas of interdisciplinary science.
New Journals
In 2018, we announced the launch of eight new journals, a significant investment in content growth that reflects the fundamental role of the physical sciences in driving research breakthroughs, technology innovation and wider societal and economic benefit.
Those new titles further diversify the scope of our content offering, reflecting the increasingly cross-disciplinary and international nature of scientific endeavour.
Ebooks
Our fast-growing ebook portfolio continues to thrive. We reached a significant milestone in 2018 as we published our 300th title.
Our partnerships with the American Astronomical Society, the Biophysical Society and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) are central to the development of our ebooks programme and support learning and knowledge transfer within our partners’ respective communities and memberships.
Conference Series
The IOP Conference Series titles are three of the largest journals in science, and published more than 40,000 proceedings articles in 2018. The Series offers fast production times and open access publishing across topics in physics, materials science, engineering, and earth and environmental sciences.
Science communication
Physics World: we relaunched the Physics World online programme last year and integrated specialist news sites to expand our coverage in medical physics, environmental science and materials research.
CERN Courier: we successfully renewed our long-term partnership with CERN, the world’s leading particle physics laboratory. We have redesigned their magazine and will expand its online presence during 2019.
Physics World Careers Guide: Now in its second year, the careers guide increased its pagination by 30%, both in editorial content and recruiter profiles. It was distributed to physics graduates at recruitment events around the world.
