IOP Publishing and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory launch open access journal – Materials Futures

23 Jun 2021 by James McGraw

A new platform for researchers from the global materials science community to publish their ground-breaking work

IOP Publishing and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (SLAB), in affiliation with the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science, are launching a new open access journal covering all areas of basic and applied materials science and technology.

Published as a quarterly journal, Materials Futures is a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to resolving challenges relevant to material synthesis and processing, characterisation, computation, theory, and experimental techniques in areas ranging from metals and ceramics to energy materials, quantum materials and biomaterials.

It is the latest addition to IOPP’s expanding portfolio of materials science journals, with the partnership with SLAB representing a commitment to publishing high-quality, accessible work. The journal will begin accepting submissions in August 2021. As an open access journal, all articles published in Materials Futures will be under a CC BY license with no charge for publication and will be free to read for all.

Professor Weihua Wang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Jinkui Zhao, Chief Scientist of the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, and Professor Torsten Brezesinski from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, have been appointed as editors-in-chief of the journal. In addition, Materials Futures will be guided by an Editorial Board made up of leaders in the field who will work closely with IOPP to ensure editorial excellence.

Speaking jointly, the Editors-in-Chief of Materials Futures said: “Materials Futures is set to be an important international journal publishing seminal research in the field, and IOP Publishing’s strengths in materials physics journals make them a natural choice as a publishing partner. We’re especially proud that the journal will be free to publish and free to read for all, helping to advance knowledge by making it truly open.”

Miriam Maus, publishing director at IOP Publishing said: “Together with SLAB, we’re delivering an exciting new platform to help researchers from across the materials science community get maximum visibility of their work and keep up to date with important developments. We’re confident that Materials Futures will become an essential resource for ground-breaking research in the field.”
