First papers publish in Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering – IOP Publishing’s new open access journal

27 Jul 2021 by Rachael Harper

IOP Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering (NCE), a new, multidisciplinary, open access (OA) journal devoted to the design, development and application of artificial neural networks and brain-inspired systems towards advancing scientific discovery and realising emerging new computing technologies.

The first issue includes:

Giacomo Indiveri University of Zurich and ETH Zurich and editor-in-chief of NCE introducing the journal, the community it serves and its future

Hardware realization of the multiply and accumulate operation on radio-frequency signals with magnetic tunnel junctions
Nathan Leroux, Alice Mizrahi, Danijela Marković, Dédalo Sanz-Hernández, Juan Trastoy, Paolo Bortolotti, Leandro Martins, Alex Jenkins, Ricardo Ferreira and Julie Grollier

The viability of analog-based accelerators for neuromorphic computing: a survey
Mirembe Musisi-Nkambwe, Sahra Afshari, Hugh Barnaby, Michael Kozicki and Ivan Sanchez Esqueda

Towards a generalized theory comprising digital, neuromorphic and unconventional computing
Herbert Jaeger

Neurogrid simulates cortical cell-types, active dendrites, and top-down attention
Ben Varkey, Benjamin, Nicholas A Steinmetz, Nick N Oza,  Jose J Aguayo and Kwabena Boahen

3D-aCortex: an ultra-compact energy-efficient neurocomputing platform based on commercial 3D-NAND flash memories
Mohammad Bavandpour, Shubham Sahay, Mohammad Reza Mahmoodi and Dmitri B Strukov

Comparing Loihi with a SpiNNaker 2 prototype on low-latency keyword spotting and adaptive robotic control
Yexin Yan, Terrence C Stewart, Xuan Choo, Bernhard Vogginger, Johannes Partzsch, Sebastian Höppner , Florian Kelber, Chris Eliasmith, Steve Furber and Christian Mayr

The scope and characteristics of Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering (NCE) have been designed in close consultation with the community so that it uniquely brings together all aspects of the field, serving a cross-disciplinary audience that will extend to physics, engineering, materials science, biology, neuroscience and computer science across academia and industry.

Introductory offer, available until 2022. All OA article publication charges are currently paid by IOP Publishing and there will be no author fees for articles submitted before 2022. Full details about the scope and editorial requirements can be found on the journal homepage.

As a fully OA journal, research published in NCE is universally accessible, ensuring maximum visibility and reach, and in the spirit of transparency and reproducibility authors will be encouraged to share data and code where appropriate for the benefit of the research community.

Professor Giacomo Indiveri, editor-in-chief of NCE said in his opening Editorial: “Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering has been established to provide a new open access medium explicitly designed to support this convergence of efforts, and to bring together all researchers engaged in these areas in a way that unites the community and defines the field of neuromorphic computing and engineering for years to come.”

Dr Tim Smith, associate director at IOP Publishing said: “Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering represents another high-profile addition to our expanding OA portfolio and one that will build upon IOP Publishing’s long-standing reputation in the applied sciences. The first content is a great start and we look forward to developing the journal’s content and functionality to serve all aspects of a field that looks certain to make a significant contribution to science, engineering and industry into the future.”
