Thanks to Tuba Akbayturk, Library Director at Koç University, Turkey, for taking part in our Librarian Spotlight interview series.
“For what it’s worth, my advice is to never stop being curious. Try to learn something new every day, no matter how small. Otherwise, it is very easy to fall behind in this rapidly changing world.”
- What made you decide to become a librarian?
To be honest, a career in libraries wasn’t in my plans during my college years. A bit of luck and a bit of curiosity pushed me in that direction. You might ask if I have any regrets 30 years later. No, I don’t; I have always taken great pleasure in every role I’ve held and every task I’ve undertaken.
- What’s the best thing about being a librarian?
As a university librarian, I love being constantly surrounded by young people and research. It is wonderful to be perpetually refreshed by the diverse perspectives of the youth and to stay close to every stage of the research process.
- After a hard day, what do you do to relax?
I love gardening. It allows me to instantly clear my head and shift my focus to something entirely different. At the same time, I really enjoy the physical activity and the chance to be outdoors.
- In your opinion, what are the most important skills to have when working as a librarian?
Even though most of the skills we need are changing rapidly, I believe the ability to be a self- learner will always remain essential.
- What’s your favourite place in your library?
My favourite spot is the Rare Books Room. The distinct scent of aged paper that greets me as I enter instantly transports me to the past, while the intricately designed bindings offer a magnificent visual feast.
- In your opinion, what is the importance of the library?
For centuries, libraries have remained at the centre of human civilization as essential cultural institutions, successfully adapting to the evolving demands of each era.
- Tell us about your chill-out area/library nook in your library (if you have one)?
I consider my own office to be my favourite ‘nook.’ I especially love the view from my window where I can rest my eyes on the greenery and watch the large mimosa tree bloom in the spring. It’s my personal sanctuary during a busy day.
- Tell us what a typical day looks like for you as a librarian.
Everyone thinks we just sit and read all day, but the reality is much more dynamic. My day is actually a juggling act of planning, budget management, HR, back-to-back meetings, analysing statistics, and driving new projects forward.
- Could you tell us the most interesting/funniest story that happened to you working as a librarian?
Due to my role, I frequently visit potential donors. During one of those visits, in addition to an archival collection, I was unexpectedly offered a real estate donation. That day remains one of the most extraordinary and unforgettable moments of my career.
- What is your favourite part of the day at work?
I don’t have just one, but two favourite times during the workday. The first is arriving at the office around 7:30 AM when it’s quiet, and the second is right after lunch, as I prepare for the afternoon with a cup of Turkish coffee.
- Could you give us one book recommendation that everyone should read?
During my OCLC fellowship, I was gifted Who Moved My Cheese? It’s a brilliant touchstone for anyone in a field defined by constant transformation. The book is a testament to the idea that you don’t need complexity to convey a deep message; its simplicity is exactly what makes its lessons on adaptability so enduring.
- If you had to describe a library in one word, what would it be?
Trust.
- What is the most valuable piece of advice you would give to someone just beginning their career as a librarian?
For what it’s worth, my advice is to never stop being curious. Try to learn something new every day, no matter how small. Otherwise, it is very easy to fall behind in this rapidly changing world.
