Congratulations to the Nobel Prize in Physics winners

04 Oct 2022 by Faye Holst

IOP Publishing would like to congratulate Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for winning the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics!  The trio have been awarded for their experiments with entangled photons and their work in pioneering quantum information science.

Working independently, the three laureates did key experiments that established the quantum property of entanglement. This is a curious effect whereby two or more particles display much stronger correlations than are possible in classical physics. Entanglement plays an important role in quantum computers, which in principle could outperform conventional computers at some tasks.

IOP President, Professor Sheila Rowan, said: “Many congratulations to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for the well-deserved recognition of their pioneering work on quantum entanglement and quantum information science! This is an area of physics with ongoing, profound impact, at a fundamental level to help understand the world around us and is being explored for use in highly novel technologies for sensing and communication today. It is also fantastic to see Anton Zeilinger, a previous IOP Newton Medal winner, going on to receive the most prestigious award in the field.”

The three scientists have published 25 research papers with IOP Publishing. Below you can explore the work they have published with us.

More than 120 Nobel laureate and Field Medal winners have now published their work with us. Here you can find links to that work and discover recently published reviews covering quantum entanglement and quantum computing.
