Empowering and supporting the scientific community

The academic publishing landscape is changing at pace. In this environment, we provide support and guidance to researchers, and immerse ourselves in the community to stay connected to its evolving needs.

Duplicate submissions checker

In 2023, we entered a pilot programme to detect duplicate submissions to scholarly publications. This workflow is part of the STM Integrity Hub. This is the first tool that can detect duplicate submissions across different journals, publishers and submission systems, while upholding robust confidentiality and privacy standards.

Representing the physical science community

In October, our Chief Publishing Officer Miriam Maus was appointed to the board of the STM Association to represent our position as a society publisher that carries the interest of its community at its core. In November the Publishers Association chose Kim Eggleton, Head of Research Integrity and Peer Review at IOPP as one of the eight most prominent people in publishing. Kim was praised for her leading voice on ethical and sustainable research practices and the shift to a more inclusive research environment.

World leading physics news

We launched a new digital version of Physics World and increased our registered users by 7%. The site averaged about 316,000 page views per month with astronomy and space being the most popular topics in 2023, generating 561,000 page views within the first seven days after articles in these categories were published.

Introducing free ethics statement checker

We introduced EthicsGen, a free online ethics statement generation tool. The tool helps authors create correctly worded ethics statements to speed submissions through peer review matching the statement criteria of an author’s journal of choice. Nearly 3,000 researchers have used the tool since we introduced it in August giving them more time to concentrate on their research.

Sharing insights and guidance

In 2023, we delivered 134 webinars for authors, reviewers, editorial boards, librarians and partner organisations to provide training, facilitate discussions and encourage connections.

Supporting Research4Life

We donated 100% of APC revenues from papers retracted in 2023 to Research4Life, an organisation that provides online access to content to institutions in low- and middle- income countries.

Informed by our community

To help us develop products and services that are tailored to the needs of the scientific research community, we hold Library Advisory Board (LAB) meetings in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia–Pacific, India and the US.

Continuous availability of service

In 2023, IOPscience maintained 100% uptime.

Guidance on using generative AI

With AI becoming ever more embedded in society, we have developed guidance on using generative AI for our editors, authors, reviewers and staff. The guidance will be reviewed regularly to keep in step with best practice.

100%

of APC income collected from retracted papers donated to Research4Life.

100%

IOPscience availability across the year.

Recognising Researchers for their important work

In 2023, we celebrated and recognised researchers who have helped us to expand the world of physics through a range of awards and prizes.
