IOP Publishing strengthens equitable research partnerships by signing up to the TRUST Code

New guidance sets clear expectations for fair and inclusive global collaboration

IOP Publishing (IOPP), the publishing arm of the Institute of Physics, has adopted the TRUST Code, a global code of conduct for equitable research partnerships, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring fair and responsible international collaboration.

The TRUST Code sets a global standard to prevent exploitation in international research. Widely adopted by institutions worldwide, including funders, universities, publishers and NGOs, its values and articles guide research in resource-limited settings, promoting transparency and reducing power imbalances.

To support this commitment, IOP Publishing has introduced new guidance for authors, editors and reviewers. These set clear expectations for involving local researchers and communities throughout the research process, from planning and data collection through to publication. The changes are designed to help address helicopter research, sometimes known as parachute research, where studies are conducted with limited involvement from the researchers and communities closest to the work. This can overlook valuable local expertise and reduce opportunities for those affected by the research to help shape it and share in its benefits.

Miriam Maus, Chief Publishing Officer at IOP Publishing, said: “Research is stronger when it draws on the knowledge, perspectives and experience of the people and communities closest to the work. By adopting the TRUST Code and introducing these new measures, we are taking an important step towards more equitable collaborations that can make a meaningful difference, improving science through local expertise and helping to ensure that everyone can benefit from its outcomes.”

IOP Publishing is a not-for-profit publisher dedicated to expanding the world of physics by offering publishing opportunities to the global research community. It exists to ensure trust in research, advance scientific discovery and help researchers achieve greater impact and recognition.
