IOP Publishing and GetFTR: A Partnership Built on Trust and Discovery

27 Jan 2026 by Faye Holst IOPP integrates GetFTR retraction and errata service on content platform to further improve research integrity IOPP integrates GetFTR platform to further improve research integrity

Accessing reliable scientific information should be simple, but for many researchers it’s not. Paywalls, unclear entitlements, and questions around credibility can slow progress. As a society publisher, IOP Publishing (IOPP) is committed to removing these barriers. Its partnership with GetFTR (Get Full Text Research) helps researchers access trusted, up-to-date content quickly and confidently.

Meeting Researchers Where They Are

By embedding GetFTR indicators into IOPscience, researchers can now see at a glance which references are available to read, whether via open access or institutional subscriptions. Even more importantly, they’re alerted to retractions and errata at the point of discovery, helping them avoid outdated or unreliable sources.

Matthew Keen, Product Manager for Access and Entitlement at IOP Publishing

“As a society publisher, we see it as our responsibility to reduce barriers to discovery and help researchers in our community trust the content they use. Partnering with GetFTR allows us to meet those needs in a practical, scalable way.”

What the Partnership Delivers

  • Smart links and entitlement indicators across cited references
  • Coverage of both subscription and open access content
  • Retraction and errata alerts embedded in references
  • Promotion of the GetFTR Browser Extension, turning any website link into a GetFTR-enabled one by adding these same signals wherever a citation is found
  • Accurate metadata sharing with Crossref, ensuring integrity signals are timely and reliable

“IOPP was one of the first publishers to partner with GetFTR as they recognised that discovery of content usually starts on someone else’s website, and that it’s important to ensure the researcher accesses the latest version. It’s really great to see how IOPP has extended their use of GetFTR to improve user journeys on their own platform, and to signal integrity issues within references and citations.”

Impact on Researchers

The collaboration between IOPP and GetFTR has delivered measurable improvements across discovery, access, trust, and efficiency:

  • Faster, smoother discovery:  the researcher experiences fewer broken links and wasted clicks
  • Greater trust in cited research: visible retraction and errata notices gives the researcher confidence in the citations

GetFTR makes scholarly content more discoverable and accessible by reducing broken links and streamlining access to full-text articles. It ensures researchers can engage with high-quality content quickly and efficiently. This improved visibility drives higher clickthrough rates over time, strengthening the reach and impact of published work and supporting better research outcomes across the community. Researchers choose GetFTR

On IOPscience, engagement is strong: between January and November 2025, GetFTR delivered 102,193 clicks, outperforming Crossref at 96,236 clicks and achieving engagement levels close to more established sources like Google Scholar, which led with 205,185 clicks.

“Looking at engagement from our authors with GetFTR, the results are remarkable, especially when compared to established services like Google Scholar and Crossref. Despite being the most recently added feature and not appearing on every article page on our publishing platform, GetFTR has achieved engagement levels on par with these globally recognised academic discovery platforms. This demonstrates that GetFTR is not only well-received but also highly effective in meeting our users’ needs. Its ability to compete with long-standing services in such a short time highlights its value and signals significant potential for continued growth.”

Leadership Through Purpose

This partnership shows how we can improve the research experience with the help of GetFTR. It also highlights the unique role of a society publisher: innovating not for profit and reinvest in the research community.

As more and more publishers adopt GetFTR, the value of these signals will grow, helping to create a more consistent and trustworthy experience for researchers across platforms and disciplines.
