IOP and IOP Publishing celebrate World Quantum Day
14 Apr 2025 by Kate Giles
Today, on World Quantum Day, which coincides with the United Nation’s 2025 International Year of Quantum, we join the global scientific community to celebrate the power and potential of quantum science and technology. From quantum computing to breakthroughs in materials science, quantum research continues to push the boundaries of discovery and knowledge.
Professor Sir Peter Knight, the UK’s representative for the UN’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) says: “World Quantum Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the impact of quantum science. Throughout my career, exploring quantum optics and quantum information science—has revealed the profound and often counterintuitive nature of reality. These discoveries are not just of theoretical interest; they are paving the way for transformative technologies in computing, communication, and beyond. By raising awareness and supporting global collaboration, we can continue to unlock the vast potential of the quantum world.”
As part of the celebration, IOP Publishing (IOPP) is presenting a special open access collection of its most popular, cutting-edge quantum research. The articles featured in IOPP’s World Quantum Day Celebratory collection include:
- Artificially intelligent Maxwell’s demon for optimal control of open quantum systems, Quantum Science and Technology
- Proof-of-work consensus by quantum sampling, Quantum Science and Technology
- Heuristic-free verification-inspired quantum benchmarking, Quantum Science and Technology
- Third sound detectors in accelerated motion, New Journal of Physics
- Shell-model study of 58Ni using quantum computing algorithmNew Journal of Physics
- Hamiltonian and Liouvillian learning in weakly-dissipative quantum many-body systems, Quantum Science and Technology
The Institute of Physics (IOP) will be sharing a video asking the general public what they think quantum is. Additionally, Physics World has created a fun Quantum quiz and will be showcasing the best of its quantum content on its website.
