Kornelius Nielsch appointed as new Editor-in-Chief of Semiconductor Science and Technology

Professor Dr Kornelius Nielsch has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of Semiconductor Science and Technology, a leading international journal on semiconductor physics.
Kornelius Nielsch is Professor of Experimental Physics at the Institute of Applied Physics of the University of Hamburg, Germany, and has tremendous research experience as coordinator of the Priority Program of the German Science Foundation (DFG) on Thermoelectric Nanostructures. He leads a large team of students, postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists carrying out basic research on multifunctional nanostructures for thermoelectronic, magnetic and biotechnological applications. Professor Nielsch is internationally recognised, having published more than 100 journal papers, and was recently identified as one of the world’s top 100 materials scientists over the last decade (2000-2010) by Thomson Reuters.
Having studied physics at the Mercator University in Duisburg from 1993 to 1997, Professor Nielsch carried out his diploma work at the University of Lund, Sweden. He completed his doctoral degree with distinction at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle, Germany, in 2002 and went on to work as a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. From 2003 until 2008 he led a successful nanotechnology research group at the Max Planck Institute in Halle, and since 2007 has been a full professor at the University of Hamburg where he has developed his research activities.
Professor Nielsch said of his appointment “I am flattered by the confidence expressed in my ability to carry out this challenging job and I will try hard to justify this confidence. Professor Nielsch took over the role at the start of 2012 from Professor Dr Laurens Molenkamp, University of Würzburg, who steps down after ten years at the helm. Professor Molenkamp, who has been an excellent figurehead for the journal and key to its growth during his time, said “I am certain that Kornelius will do an excellent job in guiding the journal through the developments of the coming decade.”
