IOP Publishing celebrates staff fundraising and volunteering efforts

11 Feb 2015 by iopp

IOP Publishing (IOP) has a long history of philanthropy. From the very beginning we have gift-aided our operating profit to the Institute of Physics, a thriving learned society that today has more than 50,000 international members, to directly support physics and the global scientific community. We also make many of our journal titles available at no or very low cost to developing nations and have waivers in place so that researchers in developing countries can publish in our open access journals.

In 2011 we formalised our Corporate Social Responsibility policy enabling staff to get involved in many different ways to support local organisations. And thanks to huge efforts from staff, we are delighted to have achieved so much through this policy.

For some staff it is about supporting our charity of the year and for others it is volunteering for local organisations.

In 2014 alone, staff raised more than £8,000 for our adopted charity FareShare South West and gave 550 hours’ of their time through our volunteering initiative. Staff also fulfilled personal challenges and raised money for a favourite cause, which over the course of the year accumulated in:

  • more than 260 miles run
  • more than 156 miles walked
  • total ascent of more than 10,000 ft
  • total descents of more than 15,300 ft
  • and many cakes baked and eaten!
