IOP Publishing celebrates 100th book

15 Sep 2016 by alisonhadley

IOP Publishing is celebrating reaching the milestone of the publication of its 100th book

The 100th title to publish, Butterfly in The Quantum World – The story of the most fascinating quantum fractal by Professor Indubala I Satija, contains a prologue and guest chapter by Douglas Hofstadter, the renowned physicist and author who first wrote on the fractal. The book is published in partnership with Morgan & Claypool Publishers in the IOP Concise PhysicsTM collection.

Since launching IOP ebooks in 2013, IOP has published 100 leading-edge books covering a wide area of topics across the physical sciences, reaching readers at over 400 institutions across 35 countries around the world.

IOP ebooksTM continues to develop and flourish. In 2014 the programme won silver in the ALPSP Awards for Innovation in Publishing, where the judges recognised the “boldness of IOP’s reinvention of a core business, which sets digital and the user at the heart of its strategy”. In addition to its existing publishing partnership with Morgan & Claypool, IOP has also signed new partnership agreements with the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), broadening the reach of the programme.

As a ‘digital-first’ book programme, its focus is on enabling authors to engage the reader beyond the constraints of the printed page, through the incorporation of interactive multimedia, interactive 3D figures, and other digital features like MathJax and MathML to optimise the reading experience.

Dr. Olaf Ernst, Commercial Director at IOP, said, “We are delighted to hit this significant milestone just three years into the programme, and that our 100th title is by such prestigious scientists and writers in the important subject of quantum fractals. We thank all of our authors for their contributions to date and look forward to working with the science community on publishing the next 100 books and beyond.”

“The overarching vision of publishing digital-first, high-quality, reader-focussed content remains our driving force. Our culture of development and innovation has meant that we can embrace the technological advantages of digital reading formats like ePub3 to heighten reader experience and promote interaction with the research being read.”

To celebrate the publishing of its 100th title, IOP has made Butterfly in The Quantum World – The story of the most fascinating quantum fractal free to read throughout September.
