24 May 2013 by iopp

Professor Giorgio Benedek has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of EPL (Europhysics Letters), a journal publishing original, high-quality letters in all areas of physics.

Professor Benedek currently works at the Department of Materials Science, University of Milan-Biccoca. His research interests include materials science and the physics of low-dimensional systems. He gained his first degree and PhD from the University of Milan-Biccoca.

Alongside his scientific research and teaching, Professor Benedek has been active in various capacities within the Italian and European physics community, at the International School of Solid State Physics at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture, Erice, Italy.

Professor Benedek took over the role of Editor-in-Chief on 10 May 2013 from Professor Michael Schreiber, Chemnitz University of Technology. Professor Schreiber leaves the position at the end of a 3-year term.

Dr Graeme Watt, Executive Editor of EPL, said: “Professor Benedek was co-Editor of EPL from 1997 to 2001 and subsequently an Advisory Board member, and we are delighted to be welcoming him back to the journal as Editor-in-Chief. Professor Benedek is an exceptional scientist and his mathematical skills and broad physics background make him the ideal person to take the journal forward.”

EPL is published under the scientific policy and control of the European Physical Society by EDP Sciences, IOP Publishing and the Società Italiana di Fisica for a partnership of 17 European physical societies (the EPL Association).
