This past year has flown by and we can hardly believe it is time once again to announce the winners of IOP Publishing’s Louise Leckner Memorial Travel Stipends. To help defray the costs of traveling to the SLA Annual Conference, being held this year in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, IOP Publishing has provided funding for new PAM librarians with four $1,000 stipends.
Qualifying applicants had to be recent graduates of a library science graduate program, in their first three years of professional librarianship, employed by a physical sciences library or as a subject specialist for one or more of the PAM disciplines, and first-time attendees of the SLA Annual Conference as a professional librarian or first-time attendees in a PAM discipline.
We would like to thank all of the new librarians who applied for this stipend. We appreciate the time and effort you put into your application.
Now let’s shine the spotlight on the 2014 Louise Leckner Memorial Travel Stipend Winners:
Chris Doty is a Science Librarian (Chemistry, Physics, and E-Science) at Emory University’s Woodruff Library. Until very recently Chris was the subject librarian for the Schools of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Chris earned an MS in Information Science at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to becoming a librarian, Chris earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Liverpool and the University of Michigan.
Ethan Masella is the Academic Outreach Librarian for the Sciences at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Ethan acts as the liaison to the computer science, linguistics, mathematics, and physics departments. Prior to Brandeis, Ethan worked as an adjunct instructor and librarian at Clinton Community College and as a project assistant for the Department of Bacteriology at UW-Madison. Ethan earned an MA in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010.
Zachary Sharrow is the Science Librarian at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, a position he just arrived in this February. Prior to this, he spent two years as a Health Sciences Librarian at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Zach earned his BA from Kenyon College and his MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh, where he dreamed of one day becoming a real, live science librarian. He is eager to start learning from the collective wisdom of the PAM division. When he’s not working, Zach enjoys spending time with his wife and three cats.
Qinqin Zhang is the Physical Sciences and Engineering Librarian at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. She received her MLIS from the University of British Columbia in 2011. Qinqin holds a BEng in Computer Science in Information Engineering (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) and an MSc in Instructional Technology (Lehigh University). Prior entering the academic librarianship field, Qinqin worked at a corporate library setting in Allentown, Pennsylvania and Shanghai, China.
