Unconventional pathways to publishing: IOP Publishing celebrates unique journeys this #WorkinPublishing Week

18 Nov 2024 by Kate Giles

To celebrate Work in Publishing Week 2024 – a national campaign initiated by the Publishers’ Association to inspire young people to pursue a career in publishing – we’re highlighting some of the routes our colleagues have taken into the publishing industry; they’re not always what you might expect!

From IT to HR, editorial to marketing, there are many different roles in publishing, some more well-known than others. No matter what your background is, there will be a place for you in the industry, and a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of publishing.

At IOP Publishing, we aim to create a workplace where diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) are deeply embedded in our culture and identity. We bring this commitment to life through dedicated employee resource groups (ERGs), our Employee Forum, and a range of supportive initiatives that foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

If someone had told me I’d end up in publishing’s finance department when I was still at university, I probably would have laughed!”

– Meloney Rodney-Nguema, Assistant Financial Accountant

“From my interview, all the way to my first day induction and everywhere in between, it’s all been about the people and how friendly everyone is”

– Sam Brimble, Head of Digital Services

There’s a real commitment to personal development at IOPP and I’ve been fortunate to have many people who have worked as mentors for me throughout my time. I don’t think you need to have a scientific background to progress at IOPP; my background is in French and linguistics and that’s never been a barrier for me.

– Sophie Nuttall, Publisher
