Thanks to Raed Al-Zoubi, Library Director at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan, and member of IOP Publishing’s Library Advisory Board, for agreeing to take part in our Librarian Spotlight interview series.
“Change is the only constant, so keep learning and be ready.”
- What made you decide to become a librarian?
Simply it happened accidentally, I used to work in ITC infrastructure and there was a chance/challenge to contribute to initiating a state-of-the-art new library, so I moved to Libraries World 13 years ago.
- What’s the best thing about being a librarian?
The best thing is having the chance to keep learning all the time.
- Tell us about your favourite book?
I don’t have something specific, but I enjoy reading Arabic literature and history books.
- After a hard day, what do you do to relax?
Sitting with my mother is one of the important things I do, and of course, enjoying a meal with my wife and children and exchanging experiences of our day.
- In your opinion, what are the most important skills to have when working as a librarian?
Mastering IT skills and science language (English so far) is very important, though excellent communication skills will always be on the top.
- In your opinion, what is the importance of the library?
To be always the bidirectional bridge to knowledge.
- What does a typical day look like for you as a librarian?
There is routine administrative work to manage, engaging with colleagues and users, and of course, time to learn and focus on strategic aspects outside peak hours.
- Is there anything you would like to share with other librarians?
Change is the only constant, so keep learning and be ready.
- If you had to describe a library in one word (or short phrase) what would it be?
Wisdom-house.
