IOP Publishing thrilled to win the ALPSP award for innovating the peer review process

18 Sep 2023 by Kate Giles

IOP Publishing (IOPP) has been awarded the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publisher’s (ALPSP) inaugural Impact Award for being the first publisher to implement both double anonymous and transparent peer review across all their owned open access journals. After being shortlisted, IOPP’s initiative was chosen by ALPSP members and a judging panel and awarded the accolade at ALPSP’s annual conference dinner in Manchester.

New for this year, the ALPSP Impact Award recognises initiatives that deliver impact on society, attitudes, education, equality, diversity, inclusion, the environment or any area that can make a significant difference to people with the broader focus on academic research and study.

Combining double anonymous peer review and transparent peer review across all IOPP’s owned journals allows for maximum objectivity during the review process, and maximum transparency after publication.

At the conference, Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review and Research Integrity at IOP Publishing, delivered two sessions on topics related to innovation in peer review, before being presented the Impact Award on behalf of IOPP.

“It is such an honour to be the first to win this vital award. At IOP Publishing we’ve been working so hard to really make peer review more equitable for researchers, whilst delivering greater transparency in peer review. This recognition by ALPSP is the icing on the cake, especially as it was voted on by members as well as the judging panel. We’re so thrilled.””

“The judges were all really impressed by such a high calibre of entries this year. For the Impact Award, the winner IOP Publishing clearly demonstrated its immediate but also potential long-term benefit. It is a model which could be taken up by other publishers and disciplines to measure and improve diversity and authorship.”

IOP Publishing extends its congratulations to all the other winners and finalists this year.
