IOP Publishing (IOPP) and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (SLAB) have launched a new diamond open access journal, AI for Science (AI4S). The interdisciplinary journal will cover key Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) topics including applied physics, materials science, chemical science, biological science, and mathematics. 

AI for Science meets an increasing need for high-quality journals dedicated to AI applications in scientific disciplines. AI and ML research stands out as one of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding research areas. In the last five years, it has expanded by nearly ten times the rate of general scientific output.  

AI for Science joins IOPP’s expanding partner journal portfolio, complementing both IOPP’s open-access journals and SLAB’s impactful research on new materials. This addition further supports China’s growing materials science landscape. 

All articles will be published on an open access basis, with publication costs fully covered by SLAB under the diamond OA model. In addition to regular article types, the journal will accept small and letter articles and long-form articles that accommodate detailed topical reviews providing an overview of a particular field, as well as perspective articles expressing the opinions and judgments of eminent authors.

The journal will open for submissions in early April, with the first articles expected to be published in September.
