DC/SLA’s student scholarship

09 Jan 2016 by iopp

In our continuing support of libraries and librarians, IOP Publishing was delighted to once again sponsor the Catherine A Jones Memorial Scholarship award for the DC/SLA Chapter.

This award is designed to assist students and future librarians in preparing for a master’s degree in library science (MLS), or a related degree, from an accredited program.

The DC/SLA’s Student Scholarship Committee awarded the 2012 Catherine A Jones Memorial Scholarship to Ms Angela Kent for her clear vision of how her unique professional interests intersect, and for her strong leadership of her school’s student chapter.

Ms Kent has a background in security and intelligence studies. The pairing of this background with an MLS will create a specialised skill set in the information field. Further, she has a clear vision of how these two facets of information studies illuminate each other, and how she intends to pursue the intersection of the two professionally within the security, defence, and intelligence communities.

Ms Kent is enrolled part-time at the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America (CUA) and expects to receive her degree in 2013, after which she plans to continue her studies as a doctoral candidate.

Shortly after her enrolment at CUA, Ms Kent volunteered to serve as president of its student chapter. She developed a student survey to help direct and focus the chapter’s autumn semester programming, strengthened the chapter’s online and social networking presence, and formalised continuity between current and future chapter leaders. She also reached out to DC/SLA by adding a student chapter hosted dinner in the “Dine Around” series.

We hope you will join us in congratulating Ms Kent as she continues on her journey toward reaching her professional and academic goals.
