Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
18 Feb 2016 by iopp
Last Thursday saw the first annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science initiated by UNESCO.
Joining our colleagues at the Institute of Physics, we invited our Twitter followers, as well as our staff, to take photographs of themselves nominating their favourite female scientist. We shared these photos on Twitter using the #WomenInSTEM hashtag.
The aim was to get people thinking about the women in science that have inspired them, whether that be a famous figure or a lecturer and to talk about with others. After all, for more than 25 years, only around 20% of students progressing on to A-level physics have been girls – something that the Institute are working hard to change.
Many of us here at IOP work with a range of fantastic female scientists, so choosing a favourite proved quite hard for some of us!
You can take a look at all of our tweets from the day, or find out more about how the Institute of Physics supports women in science.
