Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Physics in Medicine & Biology
In 2026, Physics in Medicine & Biology (PMB), published by IOP Publishing and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), celebrates 70 years at the forefront of medical physics research.
Founded in 1956 to serve medical physicists, biomedical engineers, clinicians and researchers, PMB has grown alongside the field itself. Over seven decades, the journal has both nurtured its core domains and embraced emerging areas that continue to advance human health.
To mark this milestone, PMB presents a programme of anniversary content that reflects on the journal’s history while looking firmly to the future. This includes a special collection of expert Viewpoints, interactive events and community discussions that highlight influential ideas, landmark papers and new directions in medical physics.
We invite you to join us in celebrating this milestone and in shaping the future of medical physics.

70th Anniversary Webinar
Wednesday 1 July 2026
Join current and two former PMB Editors-in-Chief for a live discussion on how medical physics research has transformed medicine and biology, and how the communication of that research has evolved since PMB was founded.
Speakers:
- Katia Parodi: Professor of medical physics at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, Germany
- Simon Cherry: Professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, University of California Davis, US, and professor of total-body imaging at King’s College London
- Steve Webb: Emeritus professor of physics at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital
