Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the research and publishing landscape, IOPP is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of openness and transparency in AI’s operational and commercial applications. We are committed to ensuring that every decision we make regarding AI is guided by our principles of ethical use, transparency, fairness and intellectual property protection.

Our principles:

These guiding principles have been created with the aim that AI technology is used thoughtfully and responsibly, reflecting our commitment to high ethical standards and the advancement of knowledge.

Ethical Use

We make every reasonable effort to ensure that the content we make available for AI training is the most current and accurate version of the scientific record and that it is of high quality for AI training purposes. We also require our AI partners to have codes of conduct for use and make these available to end users.

We do not permit the use of AI models for any illegal or harmful activities, including violating rights, promoting violence or terrorism, child exploitation and compromising security.

Transparency

We are open about the use of our content in AI applications. We require AI companies to clearly disclose their methods and processes for utilising our content, ensuring the community is well-informed about the application and impact.

Fairness

We ensure that copyright owners who are entitled to a royalty receive fair and equitable compensation, where applicable, through transparent compensation models that reflect the value of the intellectual property being licensed.

We recognise the significant contributions of researchers to the advancement of science and knowledge. We will collaborate with AI providers to ensure that proper attribution is given where reasonably practicable.

By allowing multiple developers to license our content to train their AI models, we prevent any single entity from having exclusive access to content, thereby avoiding unfair competitive advantages.

Intellectual Property Protection

We are committed to protecting the intellectual property rights of the research we publish for the benefit of the entire research community. We want to ensure that all content is safeguarded under copyright laws, and that AI companies fully acknowledge and respect these rights where required to do so. Engaging with AI companies ensures we are able to license the works under acceptable terms and conditions which we have agreed at the outset.

Through our licensing efforts we are ensuring legally compliant, responsible and ethical use of published research for AI training. By working with the AI companies, we can protect intellectual property rights, provide fair compensation, where relevant, to copyright holders, and maintain transparency and trust in AI applications. These collaborations align with our vision to be a trusted partner to the physical science community in advancing high quality research that delivers social and economic benefit to the world.
