First papers publish in J Phys Complexity – IOP Publishing’s new open access journal for complex systems

IOP Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of JPhys Complexity, an interdisciplinary journal focusing on the science of complex systems and networks.

JPhys Complexity is an open access journal that showcases the highest quality research in terms of significance, originality and scientific rigour.  Stretching across all strands and sub-disciplines within complex systems and networks, JPhys Complexity features research in physics, biology, chemistry, environmental science, social sciences, economics, and related fields.

The first issue includes:

• Linyuan Lü and Manuel Mariani from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, examine the challenges of network-based ranking in social systems
• Matthieu Nadini and colleagues from New York University explore reconstructing irreducible links in temporal networks
• Joaquín Torres of the  University of Granada and Ginestra Bianconi from Queen Mary University of London discuss the dynamics of simplicial complexes
• Samuel Johnson of the University of Birmingham explains why directionality matters in complex systems
• Michelle Cirunay from, De La Salle University, Manila and colleagues study preserved layout features embedded in road network development
• And Vee-Liem Saw and Lock Yue Chew from Nanyang  Technological  University,  Singapore, look at the theory of no-boarding buses

JPhys Complexity is led by founding Editor-in-Chief, Dr Ginestra Bianconi, of Queen Mary University of London. Dr Bianconi said: “Scientific understanding of complex systems is key for addressing burning questions about our future as a society. Complexity pervades natural and man-made systems including the brain, the climate, society and the economy; and requires a highly interdisciplinary approach at the frontiers between physics, mathematics, computer science, biology, economics and the social sciences.”

Dr Tim Smith, Associate Director at IOP Publishing, said: “Our ambition for JPhys Complexity is to create a journal that covers all aspects of an increasingly multidisciplinary research field; and in doing so, maximise the exchange of knowledge between existing and emerging communities relevant to complexity.
