The Institute of Physics (IOP) and IOP Publishing (IOPP) congratulate U.S. scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton for winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.  

President of the IOP, Professor Sir Keith Burnett welcomes the award for the machine learning pioneers and said: “It is incredibly exciting to see key ideas and techniques in Physics helping to drive new ways to model and understand the wider world and machine learning is undoubtedly one of the transformational technologies of the future.”

He added: “Their work with artificial neural networks is contributing to a whole new generation of smarter, faster and more adaptable processing and thinking systems, which could transform all of our lives.”   

Miriam Maus, Chief Publishing Officer at IOPP says: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics winners! We are proud to have published some of their ground-breaking discoveries, which have advanced research in areas ranging from particle physics to materials science and astrophysics.”
