Providing publishing opportunities to the community
Responding to the needs of our research community is at the heart of everything that we do. It’s the driving force behind our efforts to enhance our author experience and journal offering to align with their evolving needs.

Relaunch of Reports on Progress in Physics™
We have relaunched our world-renowned journal, Reports on Progress in Physics™ that sits at the pinnacle of our physics journal portfolio. Adding to its long-established authoritative reviews programme, the journal now also welcomes ground-breaking original research in all areas of physics with an OA option for all authors.

New journal launches
We launched Sustainability Science and Technology, an interdisciplinary, open access journal dedicated to advancing sustainability through cutting-edge research in science, technology, and engineering. The new journal brings together researchers from diverse disciplines across engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science and environmental science to address global challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Expanding our environment journals portfolio
We added two new OA journals: Environmental Research: Energy and Environmental Research: Food Systems to our expanding Environmental Research series that now includes eight titles extending across all areas of environmental science.

Publishing impactful books
We published 110 books covering a wide range of physical science topics. Notable examples are a comprehensive exploration of the impact of ‘Big Science in the 21st Century’ on our society and a practical guide about ‘Creativity for Scientists and Engineers’.

Conference series
As one of the world’s largest publishers of conference proceedings, we continued to provide organisers and authors with a fast and effective service. Our platform provides conference organisers with the tools to manage the peer review process and to help safeguard the integrity of the content. We published the proceedings of 420 conferences in 2023.

Building a new submissions system
Together with Morressier, we started the development of an integrated, state-of-the-art platform that will streamline the peer review and journal submission process. The partnership seeks to boost efficiencies, improve the quality and integrity of scientific outputs, and enhance the author and reviewer experience.

Supporting our partners to thrive
As a trusted partner to 23 fellow societies, we offer our publishing expertise and infrastructure to help them thrive.

Partner journal success
In 2023, the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing (IJEM) achieved significant success, making media headlines and securing the top rank in its subject category according to Clarivate’s Journal Citation Report. The most downloaded article in 2023 focuses on nanoscale semiconductors, offering valuable insights for researchers in semiconductor materials and electronic device applications.

IOP Publishing Partner Forum
We hosted our first international partner forum at the Institute of Physics’ headquarters in London, bringing together partner organisations from around the world. Chief Publishing Officer, Miriam Maus spoke about the future of publishing and our vision for the scholarly industry.

Expanding the reach of Peer Review Excellence training and certification programme
In 2023, our partners the American Astronomical Society (AAS), the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) started to offer our free online Peer Review Excellence training and certification programme to their authors.

Physics World Jobs Partner Network
We developed our partnership with the American Physical Society’s (APS) Careers program in 2023, by integrating APS Jobs within the Physics World Jobs Partner Network. Additionally, we launched a Job Fair module and a CV/resume search service to help signpost the most suitable vacancies available to global physical science talent.
