We have numerous publishing-related roles within IOP Publishing, so whether you’re a recent graduate or have several years’ experience of STM publishing, a career in a publishing-related role could be for you. What follows are examples of some of the publishing roles we have available.


As a publisher, you will have responsibility for the science strategy of the products and services within your portfolio – including journals, magazines and websites. You’ll also contribute to the development of business strategies and tactics for your products and services. You will act as an advocate for your portfolio, working with key organisations and institutions to generate material and support, and will be charged with achieving a high profile at conferences and university visits to authors, reviewers and partners, becoming the face of your products.

You will work closely with the scientific community to ensure scientific research is communicated globally.

Publishing editor

As a publishing editor, you will be crucial to the maintenance and development of our journals. Working in a close-knit team, you’ll focus on the peer-review system – the peer-review process is used to assess the quality of scientific research before it is published. Peer review is a highly labour-intensive process; it includes building a reviewer pool, selecting reviewers, monitoring reviewer performance and ensuring all revisions have been incorporated.

You’ll interpret the comments of these reviewers, making editorial decisions as to whether or not articles are suitable for publication.

Production editor

The Journals Production Department is responsible for the efficient editing, typesetting and printing of a range of journals, as well as the preparation of material for publication via the web. As a production editor, you are at the forefront of this effort. As part of the journal publication team, liaising with the publisher and publishing administrator, the production editor is responsible for the production of one or more journals. The production process adds significant value to the online version of an article by creating embedded links, enhanced functionality like video abstracts, post-publication annotations such as errata, and other tools and services that add significant value for the user.
