Professor Michael Vollmer has been awarded the 2013 Robert Wichard Pohl Prize at the German Physical Society’s annual spring meeting, held 4 – 8 March in Dresden, Germany.

Professor Vollmer, Editorial Board member of IOP Publishing’s peer-reviewed journals European Journal of Physics and Physics Education, won the award for his outstanding work in the research field of atmospheric optics and infrared thermography.

A professor of experimental physics at the University of Applied Sciences in Brandenburg, Germany, Professor Vollmer is well known nationally and internationally for his presentations at teacher-training events. He has published 23 papers in European Journal of Physics and Physics Education.

Christina Walker, Executive Publisher, Education, at IOP Publishing said: “On behalf of all staff here at IOP Publishing, we congratulate Michael Vollmer on this well-deserved award. Professor Vollmer is a valued contributor to both our education journals: his work as an author and reviewer has helped support and improve physics education at both school and university level.”

The Robert Wichard Pohl Prize is awarded annually for outstanding contributions to physics that have also had a special impact on other disciplines in science and technology, and for extraordinary achievements in the dissemination of scientific knowledge and physics education.

To celebrate Professor Vollmer’s award win, a collection of his papers has been made free-to-read for a limited time.
